The Florida Wellness Network has been anticipating presenting our 1st Health and Wellness Expo andTrade Show on September 28th to Southwest Florida.  Due to the unfortunate timing of the organizers need for surgery and rehabilitation, a decision has been made to reschedule the September Trade Show to a later date when we can bring you the type of quality programs and vendors that you have enjoyed for the past four years at Wellness Wednesday events from the Florida Wellness Network.  Due to venue scheduling, the new date will likely be in the Spring of 2012.

We would like to thank our speakers Santiago De Choch, Sayer Ji, and Rev. Farnum for offering their time and knowledge to the community.  We look forward to their enlightening presentations at our rescheduled trade show event.

Local Angles: Food. Why Local? Why Organic?

"Steps to reduce your carbon footprint, save money, eat healthier and supporting local economies by growing your part of your own food and supporting local producers for the rest" – it really makes a difference in your life, the life of your children AND community!

BIO:  Santiago De Choch is originally from Argentina, but has lived in SW FL for over a decade. In the past, he's lived in different countries, getting involved in farm and community garden projects in Israel, Greece and South America. With his company Green Coaches, Santiago specializes in setting up food gardens at local restaurants, community centers and schools. He's a board member of Slow Food SW FL, manages the GreenMarket at the Alliance for the Arts in Fort Myers, which supports local food producers, and is a small farmer himself, with an operation in Pine Island.

Local Angles & Spirituality: The Green Movement as a Form of Spirituality

"Eco-chic" sells and has turned into a marketing ploy.  Beyond what you purchase, what are some deeper ways to establish connections with the earth and her people?  Advocating environmental and social change is becoming an expression of the kind of spirituality that nurtures and enriches our lives.  Join Rev. Allison in an exploration of the intersections of eco-justice and spirituality from an inclusive, interfaith perspective. Develop tools in one’s daily life to stay more connected to one’s spirit, a rewarding place!

BIO: Rev. Farnum has been minister to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Myers since August of 2008.  In community and denominational life, she is currently serving on the board of Interfaith Action of Southwest Florida, an ally organization of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. She is also a member of the Unitarian Universalist Allies for Racial Equity, and serves on the Lee County Homeless Coalition Board.  Rev. Allison is on the clergy committee of the interfaith social justice organizing group, the Lee County Interfaith Sponsoring Committee. Before moving to Fort Myers, Allison and her partner lived in Chicago, Illinois.

Local Angles: Health Questions to Ask Your Doctor:

Long Term Effects & Proven Natural Options For the Top Drugs for Heart Disease, Diabetes and Cholesterol.

Many of the most successful drugs being sold today are gaining notoriety for having a wide range of serious side effects.  Statin drugs, for instance, represent a 25 billion dollar industry, and have recently been shown to weaken the heart muscle, despite the aggressive claim that they improve cardiac function. Diabetic drugs like the recently withdrawn Avandia have been shown to increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events.

With the growing concern about the dangers of these drugs many are looking to natural alternatives. And yet, many see this burgeoning nutrition industry field as a wild west of unsubstantiated health claims and unregulated products. Sayer will discuss the increasingly voluminous biomedical research supporting the use of natural alternatives to prescription medication and how a grassroots movement has formed to take back control of one's health using food as medicine.

BIO: Sayer Ji is the nutrition director at the Naples Birth Center and the corporate educator at For Goodness Sake, Inc.  He is a nutrition and industry consultant and in private practice as a nutritional consultant.  Sayer's most recent article: Opening Pandora's Bread Box: The Critical Role of Wheat Lectin in Human Disease  was featured on www.mercola.com and published in the Winter 2009 edition of the Journal of Gluten Sensitivity edited by Dr. Ron Hoggan.  Sayer has also been published in the Well-Being Journal. Sayer's other writings can be found on his personal website where he also makes himself available for private consultations.
